NEIGHBOR HELPS DURING FIRE

A fire in Williamsport on Saturday threatened to displace a family before a neighbor helped fight it and de-escalated a situation that police say  could have been worse. According to the Sun Gazette, there were no injuries after the neighbor doused a kitchen fire with a portable fire extinguisher at 244 Seminary Street before 4:30pm.  First responders from Citizens Hose Company were able to put the fire out completely with one hose in just a few minutes.  Damage was under $5,000, and the family, now staying with relatives, should be back in their house this week.

MOUNT PLEASANT MILLS MAN ARRESTED FOR DUI

A Snyder County accident led to a DUI charge for a Mount Pleasant Mills man.  According to Selinsgrove State police, 38-year-old Aaron Aikey allegedly caused a two-vehicle crash October 16 along PA route 104 in Perry Township and fled the scene.  State police later located Aikey and arrested him, saying he showed signs of impairment and admitted to drinking alcohol before driving.  He refused a blood alcohol test and will face the charges in District Court.

NO APPOINTMENT FOR THE VACATED UNION COUNTY DA POSITION

Following the death of long time District Attorney D. Peter Johnson,  Two Union County judges rejected the motion from Union County Assistant DA Martin R Wilson to appoint Brian Kerstetter, who is a Union County DA candidate and First Assistant DA to fill the position. According to the Daily Item, the judges wrote that the court has no authority to appoint under section 1404, and by the operation of law, the first assistant is the acting district attorney and has already assumed and is exercising the duties of the office.  The person who will fill the position will be determined by the voters in Union County in the November 7th election.

QUARTER-FOR-A-CART PROGRAM AT WEIS WILL NOT CONTINUE

Weis Markets has stopped the trial program of renting a cart for a quarter at select stores around Central PA.  According to Penn Live, a Weis grocery store spokesperson said stores in Williamsport as well as in Milton, Bloomsburg and Mt. Pocono tested the cart payment system where the user gets the quarter back after the cart is returned, and they will not be implementing the program at this time.  The test was in place to find ways to lower prices, ensure shopping carts were available, and minimize theft and damage to cars caused by loose carts.

BUCKNELL STUDENT FACES DUI CHARGES

A 21 year old Bucknell student is facing DUI charges and traffic summaries after he crashed his Jeep Compass into a home in East Buffalo Township on September 9th.  According to North Central PA dot com, Mason J. Muir was allegedly high when he went off the road near the intersection of Westbranch Highway and Furnace Road, and crashed into a nearby house.  Police say none of the 5 occupants of the home were injured, but the home was seriously damaged before Muir then fled the scene on foot, returned to the crash scene a short time later, and was apprehended.  His preliminary hearing is November 2nd.

PAXINOS HUNTER IDENTIFIED

The cause of death has been released for the Paxinos bow hunter who was found deceased earlier this week in Shamokin Township.  According to the Daily Item, 61 year old Robert Plasters died after falling from a tree while he was hunting Monday night.  When Plasters did not return Monday night, a ground search with state police and Pennsylvania game wardens began in the area of Irish Valley where Plaster’s car was found parked in a wooded area.  Authorities say the man fell about 40 feet from the tree and was found at its base Tuesday around 4:30pm.

PENNDOT RESURFACING IN LYCOMING COUNTY THIS WEEK

PennDOT says the resurfacing project along I-180 is returning this week in Montoursville Borough, and Loyalsock, Fairfield, and Muncy townships.  According to PennDOT, contractor will be installing new foundations for highway lighting at the Fairfield Road interchange and at the on-ramp from Broad Street westbound to I-180 westbound.  Work is expected to be done between 6am and 2pm, weather permitting.

PA DOG LAW UPDATED

Governor Josh Shapiro signed a bill last week updating Pennsylvania’s Dog Law to improve public safety in communities and improve conditions for dogs in breeding kennels, day cares, and shelters statewide. According to WPVI, all dogs three months and older in Pennsylvania will now be required to be licensed at the time of purchase. Changes to the law take effect after 90 days. Get information on registering your dog at ‘License your dog pa.pa.gov’.

*Ryan Blaney got the checkered flag and qualified for the championship with a win at Martinsville Speedway on Sunday, followed by Aric Almirola, Denny Hamlin, Chase Briscoe and Joey Logano.
*Ryan Blaney will race for his first Cup title. Blaney is in the final four next week at Phoenix Raceway, where he will race Kyle Larson, Christopher Bell and William Byron for the Cup championship.
