FATAL TRACTOR PULL ACCIDENT

A terrible accident took the life of a woman from Johnstown at the Union County West End Fair Friday night.  According to WNEP, around 8:30pm a piece of an exhaust wheel from a tractor blew apart during a tractor pull event and struck the 33 year old woman in the neck.  State Police at Milton said emergency responders and off-duty EMS responded to the scene near Laurelton and performed extensive lifesaving efforts.  There is no suspicion of foul play.  The identity of the woman has not yet been released by the Union County Coroner. 

MAN CHARGED FOR USING COUNTERFEIT MONEY

A New Jersey man pleaded guilty to passing counterfeit cash in Lackawanna, Lycoming, and Columbia counties. According to U.S. Attorney General, 35-year-old Brandon Williams passed counterfeit cash twice near Scranton, but police say last April, Williams used counterfeit bills at Walmart and at Weis Market in Montoursville, as well as trying to pass additional counterfeit cash at Dollar Tree in Bloomsburg. The maximum penalty under federal law for each charge is 20 years of imprisonment, a term of supervised release following imprisonment, and a fine.

TRAFFIC SAFETY FUNDS AWARDED TO LOCAL MUNICIPALITIES

Two point six million dollars in traffic safety grants has been awarded to several local municipalities through PennDOT’s “Green Light-Go” program. According to Senator Gene Yaw, the boroughs of Jersey Shore, Muncy, South Williamsport the City of Williamsport all received state funding to help improve safety and traffic flow, Including updated signal equipment which updates will improve the efficiency and operation of existing traffic signals.  Statewide, 77 municipalities received over $35.5 million in the  program. The projects will be funded through the appropriation for fiscal year 2023-24. 

GRAND SLAM PARADE WELCOMES THE WORLD TODAY

Williamsport Welcomes the World to the 17th Annual Little League World Series today kicking off with the Grand Slam Parade in the city of Williamsport at 5:30.  The 20 teams who made it to Williamsport will be featured walking the route or on floats, among the marching bands, and many local businesses representing and handing out treats to the kids. This year there will be 100 or so water-filled plastic barriers positioned on the side streets at the parade route to prevent entry of vehicles into the parade. The series goes til August 27th  when the champions of the U.S. and International brackets meet in South Williamsport at for the world title.

BERWICK HELICOPTER ACCIDENT CLAIMS ONE LIFE

An autopsy is scheduled for today for a man who died in a helicopter accident Saturday morning around 9:30am in Berwick.  According to the FAA and NTSB, 39-year-old Theodore Farwell of Orangeville was piloting a crop-dusting helicopter and eye-witnesses said the pilot made one pass and left the scene past Mifflin X Road.  The people who followed the craft found the crash in a nearby cornfield near some homes, and pulled Farwell from the wreckage, until first responders arrived at the scene.  Farwell was declared dead at the scene of the crash. About 20 customers lost power according to PPL, but it was restored by Saturday night.

FIRST RUN PROGRAM GIFT COMES TO PA FOOD BANK

 Central Pennsylvania Food Bank’s Healthy Food Hub in Williamsport accepted a gift of 40,000 pounds of macaroni and cheese by Land O’ Lakes, Inc. Thursday.  According to North Central PSA dot com, the gift was part of a program called the First Run Program which donates products directly off the company’s manufacturing line to food banks in the Feeding America Network to help families in need.  Dignitaries including Representatives Joe Hamm and Jaime Flick, Congressmen Dan Meuser, State Senator Gene Yaw and others from the department of Agriculture and Land O’ Lakes were in attendance  at a recent ceremony.  Get information at centralpafoodbank.org.

BILLTOWN BRASS ANNOUNCES CONCERT SERIES

The Williamsport Symphony Orchestra’s Billtown Brass Band led by Director Rick Coulter has announced their Summer Brass Concert Series.  According to a press release, the series begins Saturday, August 19, at Central Oak Heights pavilion in Milton, at 7pm. program features a mix of pieces that aim to provide lively, audience-friendly entertainment that embodies the essence of summer.  The Billtown Brass Band will also perform on Friday, August 25, at 5:00 PM on Pine Street, as part of the Williamsport Welcomes the World Celebration.

PENNDOT FEATURES LITTLE LEAGUE TRAVEL INFO ON WEBSITE

PennDOT has announced updates to the 511PA traveler information website which includes new features and real-time travel and alternate-route information for fans headed to the Little League World Series.  Drivers are encouraged to use 511PA.com/LLWS which  is dedicated to monitoring traffic conditions on the primary travel routes to the event. Travel times and alerts are provided for north and south travelers along Route 15, Route 220, and Interstate 80 as they filter toward Market Street.  The PA Turnpike Commission and PennDOT have also updated the 511PA Travel Links page with new information about reporting suspected human trafficking.  That can be reported to State police through their tipline at 888-292-1919 or online at [email protected].

 Michael McDowell kissed the bricks at Indianapolis Motor Speedway Sunday beating  Chase Elliott by less than a second for his second NASCAR crown jewel victory – he also secured a playoff spot.  Daniel Suarez was third, Tyler Reddick was 4th, Alex Bowman rounded out the top 5.
