RAIN FROM NICOLE THWARTS SOME VETERANS DAY PLANS

Heavy rain is expected Friday due to the remnants of Hurricane Nicole and it’s affecting some Veteran’s Day plans.  The event in Montoursville where US Representative Fred Keller was expected to speak has been cancelled, but there will be a “Six Points of Light” event  at the Veteran’s memorial at Lycoming Creek Road and Cottage Avenue tonight at 5:30pm. Representative Joe Hamm will be speaking at the Jersey Shore Presbyterian Church at 235 South Main Street in Jersey Shore Friday night at the Veteran’s Day Prayer for America.

VICTIM IDENTIFIED IN FATAL ELDRED TOWNSHIP CRASH

Police have released the identities of the people involved in the one car accident in Eldred Township at Northway and Harvey Road.  According to the Sun Gazette, the Lycomign County Coroner reported that 66 year old Stephen Ranck of Hughesville dioed of blunt force trauma in the fatal crash that happened last Friday afternoon around 3:30PM.  Ranck’s passenger 66 year old Michael Hill of Hughesville was rescued from the accident and transported to UPMC Williamsport.  Hill suffered critical injuries after the vehicle he was in went down a 30-foot embankment.

CARELESS SMOKING CAUSED APARTMENT FIRE

There was 40 thousand dollars worth of damage done to a Williamsport apartment building that caught fire last month.  According to the Sun Gazette, 11 people were left homeless from the fire at 2205 West Fourth Street where one woman jumped from the third floor of the structure before fire crews arrived on the scene.  She was hospitalized and later released.  Williamsport Fire Chief Sam Agnst says they have determined that careless smoking caused the fire that broke out about 130am on October 23rd.

TWO-DAY BLOOD DRIVE IN LOCK HAVEN

There will be a two day blood drive at Lock Haven, a Commonwealth University next Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons November 15th and 16th.  According to the Sun Gazette, the Lock Haven Red Cross Club is sponsoring the event that will be 1-6pm at the Student Recreation Center at 550 Railroad Street.  Those who wish to donate should schedule an appointment to ensure an opportunity to donate.  Go to redcrossblood.org and enter code LHUUNIVERSITY.

SELINSGROVESCHOOL SUPERINTENDENT ADDRESSES VANDALISM

The vandalism and damage that was done at Milton’s Alumni Field last Friday night allegedly by Selinsgrove players after a 30-0 playoff win over Milton Friday night.  Selinsgrove Superintendent Dr. Frank Jankowski released a statement last week addressing the rumor that there was urine spread in the locker rooms – but that was false.  There are now reports of graffiti damage that was not reported initially.  According to media outlets, the Selinsgrove Athletic Director and members of the coaching staff were immediately made aware of the vandalism, and they responded with a request for Milton administrators to ‘send a bill’.  Photos taken of alleged damage at the facility posted to social media were later deleted.  Selinsgrove is at Jersey Shore tonight in the District 4 4A Championship game.

FIRE IN SHAMOKIN EXTINGUISHED QUICKLY

There was a fire that struck in Shamokin last night.  According to The News Item, two calls went out for heavy smoke seen at half-double home 238 West Walnut Street.  Fire crews were on the scene quickly and extinguished the blaze by just after 6:15pm.  No injuries were reported, and no information was released about the condition of the home.

MONTOURSVILLE CONSIDERING NEW POLICIES FOR ARMED GUARDS

A policy was approved by the Montoursville Area School Board to allow for the decision to hire contracted armed guards at their schools. According to North Central PA dot com, School Board President David Schimmel said the board may vote to approve specific personnel hires at an upcoming special meeting in the next couple of weeks if they feel comfortable after interviews this week.  The voting moves forward after the Board’s October meeting, where they approved job descriptions for armed guards.  Some members of the board want still like to have an official vote to approve whether the district goes through with adding armed personnel.  The Board did vote to approve the policy that will allow guards that are contracted independently or through a third-party, to carry firearms on school property with a vote of 7-1.

VETERAN’S MEMORIAL AT UPMC WILLIAMSPORT

UPMC unveiled a new veteran’s memorial monument on the Williamsport campus this week for the Veteran’s Day holiday and dedicated it to former UPMC Williamsport President and veteran Steve Johnson.  According to North Central PA dot com, Johnson who was only recently informed about the dedication, said he was humbled by the honor and that the monument is about those working in healthcare and serving their country.  The monument design is a soaring eagle with medallions representing the six branches of the U.S. military.  There are about 15 hundred veterans employed in the UPMC network.
