According to North Central PA dot com, Berwick Police recently nabbed three men on a traffic stop, in late August. Willis Person, was driving a Kia Forte, with a suspended license and also holding an open container of alcohol. Jonathan Diefenderfer, was wanted on an arrest warrant out of Columbia County; was lying in the back seat. A front seat passenger, Levi Stout, was also arrested on various drug charges. Person also had a loaded Ruger 357 handgun in the car. In addition, officers found 103 bags of heroin; along with cocaine and pills. Person and Diefenderfer are scheduled to appear before District Justice Richard Cashman on Monday afternoon. Stout is scheduled to appear on October 10th.

The race for the Pennsylvania U.S. Senate seat, will finally have a debate on October 25th. The debate between Lieutenant Governor John Fetterman and Doctor Mehemet Oz, will be held in Harrisburg and is scheduled to air across nine television stations around the state, including some stations in adjacent states, to ensure the maximum potential reach to voters. In the area, the debate will air on WBRE and WYOU in Wilkes Barre / Scranton; and WTAJ in the Altoona / State College areas.

Residents in the Berwick area, saw the closing of their Emergency Department at Berwick Hospital Center, take place on Saturday morning. According to online media reports, the closure is due to a lack of staffing. However, the remainder of the hospital is still open for services. The Emergency Department was initially set to close on October 13th; but, reopen as a Mental Health facility.

The Mansfield campus of Commonwealth University, will be able to soon start training officers for The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission’s Waterways Conservation Officers, in the entire state. The initial class of trainees in the program, got underway in late August and is expected to be complete in February. Scholarships, and other needs are being offered by the school, for the students.

A four year old was found wandering in a neighborhood in Berwick, last month and when police attempted to locate a parent, found that the residence was in an unfit condition. Angelica Shaffer was charged with endangering the welfare of a child. Children and Youth, along with the Berwick Codes Officer were also notified. A preliminary hearing for Shaffer is slated for Monday, in Berwick.

A New Jersey student, who attends Bloomsburg University, has been charged with secretly recording conversations with his professor, without the instructor’s knowledge.  37 year old Eric Meier, sent emails that included audio recordings to administrators of the school, of Dr. Karl Henry, a Biology professor, believing that the instructor was sending “messages of hate”. A preliminary hearing has not been scheduled for the incident.

High school students from across the region will have the opportunity of exploring their options for college, when 61 colleges and universities will converge in one location, for “College Night” on Thursday, September 22nd. The event will take place from 6:30 to 8:30pm, and will be held at Lycoming College’s Keiper Recreation Center. The Lycoming County Counselors Association and Lycoming College, are sponsoring the event.

Residents in the Coudersport area, will have the opportunity of having their child safety seats checked by Pennsylvania State Police, on Sunday from 8am to 2pm. The event will take place at the Coudersport Volunteer Ambulance Association headquarters at 122 East Second Street. The vehicle’s manual and the instructions for the car seat are requested to be brought along. There is no fee for the event.

NASCAR PLAYOFFS:

The #17 Ford driven by Chris Buescher, won the Bass Pro Shops Night Race on Saturday night at Bristol Motor Speedway. Chase Elliott was second, William Byron came in third, Christopher Bell finished fourth and Kyle Larson rounded out the Top 5. Buescher led the majority of the last 100 laps of the race, to prevail for his first victory of the 2022 season. Austin Dillon, Tyler Reddick, Kyle Busch, and Kevin Harvick were eliminated from the playoff chase.
