FIRST SNOWY MORNING IN THE CITY SLOWS THE COMMUTE
The icy conditions and light snow affected roads in parts of Lycoming County today. PennDOT reported cautiously slow conditions on north and south Route 15 between Buttonwood and Trout Run with 511pa.com showing Northbound 15 at Trout Run particularly icy and slow. Highway 220 between Laporte and Muncy Valley was also affected by icy roadways. Accidents where police responded today –15,000 block of I-180 EB lane – a car went off the highway onto on-ramp on shoulder at Halls/Pennsdale exit, Muncy Creek township at the Muncy River Bridge an accident slowed traffic westbound on Water street and an accident slowed traffic at 932 Rt 442 in Clarkstown with 1 car overturned. We can expect just blustery conditions today with a few flurries but the weather will calm down Saturday.
DUBOISTOWN WILL WAIT ON REGIONALIZATION FOR NOW
According to at least a third of registered voters in DuBoistown who signed a petition, they want to keep their police department. According to the Sun Gazette, DuBoistown Borough Council voted to wait on deciding to dissolve the borough police department at their meeting this week. An original proposal was for regionalization, to contract with South Williamsport’s police department for police coverage not to exceed 96 thousand dollars a year, but now there will be more discussion after the public outcry.
LOYALSOCK TOWNSHIP STORE SLATED TO CLOSE
A Local Kmart Store will be closing up at the beginning of next year with liquidation sales beginning by this Thanksgiving. Published reports from the company say that the K-mart on East Third Street in Williamsport is on the block as on the list 40 stores nationwide that will close in February. Two other locations in slated for closure in Pennsylvania are in Berwick and Wilkes-Barre Township
WWII SOLDIER WILL RETURN HOME TO NORTHUMBERLAND
A local family was notified recently that the remains of their family member, WWII Army Private 1st Class Horace Middleton of Northumberland, have been identified by the US Department of Defense and will be returned to them According to WNEP, Pvt. Middleton was killed in action in Burma on July 12, 1944 when he was 20 years old. A family member of Middleton who lives in Milton posted on social media that they are happy that he is coming home after 75 years thanks to the DNA testing. A local cemetery in Milton is making arrangements for when he returns – hopefully in about 2 months.
PORTION OF PA TURNPIKE WILL BE SHUT DOWN FOR CONSTRUCTION THIS WEEKEND
According to Accuweather/ Valley weather flurries and windy conditions continue today but the snow calms down for Saturday and Sunday, but one Pennsylvania traffic concern for late Saturday and early Sunday – Route 76, The PA Turnpike will be shut down eastbound for construction from midnight to 5am Sunday November 10th, from the Allegheny Exit 48 to the Pittsburgh Exit 57. Plan your travels accordingly
CIVIL SUIT WILL BE FILED AGAINST WILLIAMSPORT
A civil action lawsuit is being prepared against the city of Williamsport this week by advocates for the handicapped for not creating an accessible entrance at the City Hall building and for violating civil rights. According to the Sun Gazette, attorneys representing the Center for Independent Living presented a letter to council and the administration at their Thursday meeting which was followed by shouting by the public. Mayor Campana left the chambers saying other members of the council haven’t voted to comply with the law requiring accessibility in the City Hall building. Other members of council disagreed and discussed the desire to become compliant and the costs involved. Ultimately a vote by council rejected bids for modifying the elevator and ramp at the front of the building for now. A member of the public told the paper that the vote forces further action by handicapped advocates. Mayor-elect Slaughter said he wants to look at the detailed costs.
STORE EVACUATED AFTER PACKAGE LEFT BEHIND
An Elysburg convenience store shut down yesterday after a suspicious package was discovered there. According to the daily item, police were called about a suitcase like item that was dropped off around 4:40 am according to video surveillance. The Sheetz store at Rt 54 and 487 was evacuated and the Reading Bomb Squad arrived on the scene. The Northumberland county Department of public safety said the package was removed without incident and the store reopened around 1pm
BLOOMSBURG STUDENTS PROTEST RACIST VIDEO
Some Bloomsburg University students staged a protest after a racist video surfaced allegedly made by a student who worked in the university’s athletic department. About 500 students marched on campus, many with signs that said “no hate”. According to WKOK, the university says the accused student has been fired from the campus job and, faces a future ‘code of conduct’ hearing that could result in additional punishment.
