MULCH FIRE BURNS FOR HOURS IN LYCOMING TOWNSHIP
A stubborn mulch fire burned for more than three hours Monday night at Sylvania Materials Excavating in Lycoming Township. According to the Sun Gazette, firefighters from several departments battled the blaze on Lycoming Creek Road, while a company employee used an excavator to break apart the roughly 50-foot-high pile and expose hot spots. More than 90-thousand gallons of water were used to fight the smoldering fire. No injuries were reported, and the cause is undetermined.
LAWMAKERS FACE DEADLINE TO REGULATE PENNSYLVANIA SKILL GAMES
Pennsylvania lawmakers are facing a deadline to regulate skill games after the state Supreme Court ruled the machines are considered slot machines under state law. The court gave the General Assembly 120 days to act. Supporters of proposed legislation say the games provide critical income for veterans groups, fire departments and small businesses. According to recent rally in Williamsport urged lawmakers to approve a regulatory framework before the deadline, warning the machines could otherwise be prohibited outside casinos.
PENNDOT LICENSE CENTERS TO CLOSE FOR LABOR DAY WEEKEND
PennDOT driver’s license and photo centers will be closed Saturday through Monday for the Labor Day holiday. Customers can still handle many services online, including license and registration renewals, address changes, duplicates, REAL ID pre-verification and driver exam scheduling. PennDOT says online services are available around the clock with no additional fees.
PENN STATE OPENS PATERNO FAMILY FOOTBALL EXPERIENCE ROOM
Penn State is opening the new Paterno Family Football Experience Room Thursday at the All-Sports Museum inside Beaver Stadium. The permanent exhibit features Joe Paterno’s original office desk and personal artifacts, along with trophies, historic footage and interactive displays covering more than a century of Penn State football. The room opens Thursday at 10 a.m., with special evening hours until 8. Public hours continue Friday from 10 to 3 and Sunday from 10 to 4.
LOGANTON WOMAN CHARGED WITH DUI AFTER AMISH BUGGY CRASH
A Loganton woman is facing DUI charges after state police say her car collided with an Amish buggy in Clinton County. The crash happened shortly after midnight July 20th near East Valley and Brungart Church Roads in Greene Township. Police say 40-year-old Dena Renee Bierly was driving a Subaru and was under the influence of alcohol. Charges include DUI with a blood alcohol level above point-one-six.
WILLIAMSPORT MOVES AHEAD WITH ONE-MILLION-DOLLAR WILLOW STREET REDESIGN
Williamsport is moving ahead with a one-million-dollar plan to redesign Willow Street between Market and Basin streets. City Council recently approved paperwork tied to the PennDOT-funded project. The updated plan calls for resurfacing, new lighting and improvements for bicyclists and pedestrians. Officials say the shared-street concept will create a safer connection through the Old City area and provide another route between downtown, Lycoming College and the Susquehanna River Walk.
PA STATE TROOPERS ASSOCIATION ENDORSES GOVERNOR SHAPIRO FOR RE-ELECTION
The PA State Troopers Association is endorsing Governor Josh Shapiro for re-election. The State Police union announced on Monday it is backing the Democrat Shapiro this November against Republican challenger Stacy Garrity. Association President Stephen Polishan says the governor has been a “strong and consistent supporter” of the department. The State Troopers Association had previously endorsed Republicans Dr. Mehmet Oz and Dave McCormick for U.S. Senate.
JAMES V. BROWN LIBRARY BOOK SALE SET FOR SEPTEMBER 17TH THROUGH 19TH
The Friends of the James V. Brown Library will hold its semiannual book sale September 17th through 19th at Pine Street United Methodist Church in Williamsport. The sale includes a Friends-only preview Thursday, followed by public hours Friday and Saturday. Proceeds benefit the library.
