HOSPITAL REOPENS AFTER FIRE IN BUILDING
UPMC Lock Haven reopened after a fire Tuesday evening forced the evacuation of the hospital in Clinton County. Officials say the fire started in an electrical or HVAC area and was quickly brought under control with no injuries reported. Four patients receiving care were were redirected to hospitals in Jersey Shore, State College and Williamsport. Officials say anyone with an emergency should still call 9-1-1.
TWO JUVENILES IN CUSTODY AFTER CAR THEFT
Police in Williamsport are investigating the theft of a vehicle from the 800 block of First Avenue Sunday night. Authorities say the stolen vehicle was later recovered on Lycoming Creek Road, and two juveniles have been taken into custody. Investigators also recovered numerous personal items in the area of Second Avenue that may belong to victims. Anyone missing property is asked to contact Lycoming Valley Regional Police or stop by the department on Nichols Place to identify recovered items.
NEW SUPERINTENDENT FOR EAST LYCO SCHOOL DISTRICT
The East Lycoming School District has named Dr. Gregory Scoggins as its new superintendent beginning July 1st. District officials say Scoggins brings more than 20 years of experience in education, including teaching, administration and curriculum leadership at the Milton Area School District. He replaces former superintendent Mark Stamm, who resigned earlier this year. A meet-and-greet with Scoggins is scheduled for May 27th at Hughesville High School. School leaders say they’re excited to welcome him to the Spartan community.
PA FARMERS CAN APPLY FOR DISASTER RELIEF FROM APRIL FREEZE
Federal officials say help is on the way for Pennsylvania farmers impacted by April’s damaging freeze. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has approved a disaster designation for 17 counties, including Lycoming, Montour and Northumberland, after below-freezing temperatures caused crop losses between April 19th and 21st. The designation allows producers to apply for emergency loans and other recovery assistance. USDA officials say additional support programs and crop insurance resources are also available through local service centers and the agency’s website.
FAMILY DISPLACED AFTER SOUTHSIDE FIRE
A South Williamsport man was rescued from the roof of his burning home Tuesday morning after becoming trapped by smoke and flames. Firefighters say the man climbed from a second-floor window onto the porch roof, where crews used a ladder to bring him safely down. The fire started in a second-floor bathroom and displaced a family of four. No injuries were reported, and the cause remains under investigation.
MUNCY TOWNSHIP SUPERVISOR HAS NOT PAID CONTEMPT FINES
A Lycoming County township supervisor continues to face mounting fines in a dispute over plans for a proposed Bass Pro Shops near the former Lycoming Mall. A judge held Muncy Township Supervisor Terri Lauchle in contempt last week and ordered her to pay 500 dollars a day until she signs a subdivision plan tied to the project. According to Penn Live, As of Tuesday, Lauchle had not paid the fines, which had grown to 25-hundred dollars. The proposed Bass Pro store is part of the larger redevelopment project at the former mall property in Pennsdale.
NON STOP FLIGHTS OUT OF STATE COLLEGE ANNOUNCED
Central Pennsylvania travelers will soon have another nonstop flight option. American Airlines is launching direct service between State College and Charlotte beginning October 5th. Officials say the flights will operate most days from State College Regional Airport, connecting travelers to more than 170 destinations through Charlotte Douglas International Airport. Local leaders say the new route is expected to boost business, tourism and regional connectivity after months of planning and collaboration among community partners.
TUG BOAT HISTORY IS ON MAIN STREET IN SHAMOKIN NOW
A piece of Shamokin history now has a permanent home downtown. The seven-foot-wide brass propeller from the historic Tug Shamokin was unveiled Saturday during the Anthracite Heritage Festival of the Arts. The 5-thousand-pound propeller is now displayed along Market Street as a tribute to the tugboat that hauled coal along East Coast ports for more than 50 years. City leaders say the propeller honors the Coal Region’s industrial history and the workers who helped build the community.
