More than a dozen homes on the 200 block of South Poplar Street in Mount Carmel were destroyed or heavily damaged after a three-alarm fire early Monday morning. ELECTION NIGHT TIES BROKEN BY RANDOM CHANCE
Two Pennsylvania races ended in rare election-night ties, and both have been decided by chance. In Snyder County, Beaver Township supervisor Nelson Narehood saw his 54-year tenure end when he lost a coin flip to challenger Roger Rice after each candidate received 91 votes. And in Lycoming County, Williamsport City Councilman Eric Beiter kept his seat after drawing a lower numbered ticket than Democrat April Line in a tie-breaker conducted by county election officials. Both races underscore just how much every single vote matters.
TIOGA COUNTY TEEN HEADING TO NATIONAL BASS FISHING CHAMPIONSHIP
An 18-year-old angler from Tioga County is getting statewide attention after competing on one of bass fishing’s biggest stages. Colegan Stiner of Wellsboro qualified for the Toyota Series Championship in Oklahoma thanks to his third-place finish in the Angler of the Year standings, during his first year on the circuit. Stiner didn’t land a bass during the November 6th to 8th championship round, but earlier success on the Potomac earned him a top-25 finish and nearly 600 dollars in winnings. He was one of only a handful of young anglers representing the Northern Division against top competitors from across the U.S. and internationally.
DUSHORE AGWAY FIRE CAUSED ONE MILLION DOLLARS IN DAMAGE
Lycoming County fire marshals could not determine the cause of a massive blaze in Sullivan County that destroyed the Dushore Agway warehouse on Route 220. Mildred’s fire chief says the building was already fully engulfed when crews arrived around 1 a.m. on November 18, after a truck driver sleeping in his cab woke up to the glow of the fire. No injuries were reported. The 13,000-square-foot structure, filled with hay, wood pellets, a tractor-trailer and other equipment, was a total loss. Damage is estimated at more than $1 million.
WATER SYSTEM WORK CONTINUES THIS WEEK
The Williamsport Municipal Water Authority says work on its ongoing water system improvement project will keep Arch Street closed for an extra week. The closure, which began last Monday, now continues through this Friday, shutting down Arch Street between Hiawatha Boulevard in Williamsport and Euclid Avenue in DuBoistown, including the Arch Street Bridge, from 7am to 5pm daily. Officials thank drivers for their patience as they continue making critical upgrades to the water system.
SOLAR FARM APPROVED FOR DANVILLE AIRPORT
Plans are moving forward for a major solar project at the Danville Airport in Riverside that could install up to 6,000 panels on county-owned land. Commissioners in both Northumberland and Montour counties have approved a lease agreement with BlueWave Energy, allowing detailed design work to begin. Airport officials say the project could double the airport’s annual revenue, helping preserve the historic 1936 hangar and support ongoing aviation operations. The proposed 2.9-megawatt array would feed power back into the PPL grid. With local, state and federal approvals still needed, construction wouldn’t begin until at least early 2027.
