CODE ORANGE AIR QUALITY ALERT CONTINUES THROUGH TONIGHT
Code Orange Air Quality Alert has been extended until midnight tonight for much of Central Pennsylvania, including Montour, Northumberland, Snyder, and Union counties. According to the Daily Item, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection says smoke from Canadian wildfires is driving elevated levels of particulate pollution. Sensitive groups — including children, older adults, and people with respiratory issues — are urged to limit outdoor activity. FISHERMAN’S BODY RECOVERED AFTER WEEKEND SEARCH
The body of a missing fisherman was recovered from the Susquehanna River in Columbia County yesterday. According to WNEP, 70 year old Edward Donnelly was last seen Saturday afternoon when he fell into the water near the Berwick-Nescopeck Bridge while fishing and did not resurface. Crews from Berwick, Salem Township, and Mahoning Township searched the river throughout the weekend, suspending operations at night. Donnelly’s body was recovered Monday morning near Briar Creek, and an autopsy is scheduled for today.
SURFACE REPLACEMENT REQUIRES OVERNIGHT WORK ZONES
Drivers on I-80 westbound in Northumberland County should expect lane restrictions this week as crews begin emergency asphalt repairs. PennDOT says work starts tonight in Turbot Township on the bridge over Route 254, where extreme heat recently caused pavement damage. Repairs will be done nightly from 9 p.m. to 1 p.m. the next day, through Thursday, August 7. Additional work will be scheduled later. Motorists are urged to use caution in the work zone.
TWO LOCAL MEN TO BE INDUCTED IN PA SPORTS HOF
Two local legends are among this year’s inductees into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame. Winfield’s Steve Kline, a former MLB pitcher and Lewisburg standout, pitched 11 seasons in the majors and appeared in the 2004 World Series. Also honored is the late Gary Brown of Williamsport, who starred at Penn State and rushed for over 1,000 yards twice in the NFL. Brown later coached in the NFL and college ranks. The induction ceremony takes place Saturday, October 26, at the Sheraton Station Square Hotel in Pittsburgh.
ELECTRICAL FIRE IN OVAL SUNDAY
No one was injured after an electrical fire broke out at a home in the 6700 block of Route 44 in Oval late Sunday afternoon. According to the Sun Gazette, volunteer firefighters arrived around 4:50 p.m. to find smoke coming from the rear of the house. Nippenose Valley fire crews brought the fire under control within 20 minutes, but a family of three will be temporarily displaced until electrical service is restored. While responding to the scene, a fire truck from Citizens Hose Company in Jersey Shore was involved in a minor mishap at Main and Allegheny streets, but no injuries were reported.
DRUG CHARGES AGAINTS THREE JERSEY SHORE RESIDENTS
Three people from Jersey Shore have been charged after allegedly buying crack cocaine in Williamsport. According to the Sun Gazette, detectives say Randy Lee Fuller, Dawn Lynn Lebert, and Larry Eugene Flook were caught in February during a surveillance operation on Memorial Avenue. Fuller exited a home with the drugs, and the trio’s vehicle was stopped near the Northway Road exit on Route 220. Authorities say Fuller faces multiple charges and is free on bail. Lebert and Flook are also charged and due in court in September.
LAURELTON CENTER RAMPING UP SECURITY
In Union County, the owners of the former Laurelton Center say repeated trespassing and vandalism have turned the once-salvageable property into a dangerous and costly liability. According to the Daily Item, the 276-acre site has seen extensive damage, including broken windows, stolen copper, and even a fire in 2023. Owners say they have ramped up security, and plan to press charges against anyone caught on the property. State police confirm at least 14 trespassing incidents since March and warn violators will face criminal charges.
MEDS FOR EMERGENCY PLANNING IN NUCLEAR FALLOUT ZONE
If you live near the Susquehanna Steam Electric Station in Berwick, the Pennsylvania Department of Health is offering free potassium iodide tablets as part of emergency planning. According to North Cetnral PA dot com, the distribution happens Wednesday, August 14, with medicine pickup sites open from 2 to 7pm at Berwick City Hall, the Butler Township Community Center in Drums, and Luzerne County Community College in Nanticoke. The tablets help protect the thyroid in the event of a radiological release. Residents are urged to check expiration dates of tablets they may already have in their possession – tablets issued before July 2024 should be replaced.SPORTS

The Las Vegas Raiders are trading cornerback Jakorian Bennett to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for defensive tackle Thomas Booker IV.
Bennett, a fourth-round pick in 2023, moves after playing 24 career games (11 starts) for the Raiders.
The former Maryland standout played well during his sophomore NFL campaign, which lasted 10 games after he underwent season-ending surgery on a torn labrum.
