AFTERNOON CRASH SLOWS 15 SOUTH THIS WEEK
A three-vehicle crash slowed traffic on Route 15, just south of the Clinton-Armstrong township line, around 5:20 pm Wednesday afternoon. According to the Sun Gazette, emergency crews reported that four people were hurt with 3 transported by ambulance to area hospitals and a fourth crash victim who declined treatment on the scene. All three vehicles were totaled, and one car ended up in a ditch, prompting lengthy delays on the busy southbound corridor. No word yet on conditions of the injured. State Police continue to investigate.
RANSOMWARE DETECTED IN THE CITY’S COMPUTER NETWORK
Lycoming County officials say ransomware was detected on the county’s computer network earlier this month, and a review is underway to determine the scope of the breach. According to the Sun Gazette, a notice is posted at lyco.org for those who may be impacted. Investigators confirm that on August 18th, cyber criminals stole certain data, including driver’s license numbers and records from the Department of Public Safety. Written notices and free credit monitoring will be provided once the review is complete. Federal law enforcement and outside cybersecurity experts are assisting in the investigation.
BIPARTISAN LAWMAKERS REQUEST PROTECTION FROM AI FOR KIDS
The Pennsylvania Attorney General has joined a bipartisan coalition of 44 Attorneys General demanding Big Tech companies strengthen protections for children using artificial intelligence chat bots. According to North Central PA dot com, Sunday says kids in Pennsylvania including in North Central PA — are potentially exposed to sexualized conversations, violence, and scams through ChatBots. The letter, sent to companies like Apple, Meta, Google and OpenAI, warns they could be held accountable for harms to minors.
SUNDAY HUNTING GUIDELINES ANNOUNCED
Following the end of the state’s Sunday hunting ban, the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources has announced a phased rollout. For the upcoming 2025-26 season, Sunday hunting will be allowed in state parks on just three dates November 16th, 23rd, and 30th, while in state forests, including those in Lycoming County, all Sunday dates approved by the Game Commission will be open, which is every Sunday from mid-September through early December. DCNR says the limited rollout in state parks gives staff time to balance safety and visitor use, with broader Sunday access expected by 2026-27.
PLEA DEAL FOR DUBOIS MAN WHO STAGED A SUICIDE
A Dubois man arrested last year on attempted homicide charges is free after reaching a plea deal in Lycoming County Court. According to North Central PA dot com, 32-year-old Dane Christofor Kay, a former cook for a local pub, pleaded no contest to felony strangulation on August 15th. Prosecutors then dismissed multiple charges, including attempted criminal homicide and aggravated assault. Kay was sentenced to up to 23 months in prison, but with time served, he was released and will serve one year of probation. Police accused Kay of staging a suicide scene after strangling a woman in January 2024.
WOMAN WHO ADMITTED TO ATTEMPTED ARSON CHARGED
A Lycoming County woman is facing felony arson charges after state police say she poured gasoline on the floor of a garage and admitted she planned to burn it down in June. According to the Sun Gazette, 59-year-old Christine Seelye was ordered earlier that day to remove her belongings from the Trimble Road home following a protection-from-abuse hearing. Troopers conducting a welfare check said Seelye smelled strongly of kerosene and reported that he woman told them she was going to burn down the structure. She was arraigned on charges including attempted arson and released on $50,000 bail.
MENTAL HEALTH PROGRAM ANNOUNCED FOR CITY EMPLOYEES
The City of Williamsport is investing in employee mental health with a new program set to start next week. According to the Sun Gazette, city council voted 7–0 to approve a contract with ESI Employee Assistance Group, giving city workers and their families up to three free counseling sessions. The service is expected to reduce the city’s health insurance costs by shifting some care away from traditional coverage. Officials say the program also offers online training and management support, and will be monitored to see if it pays for itself in the first year.
OFFICIALS CONSIDER SAVING HISTORIC SLIFER HOUSE
Union County officials are stepping in to try to save a piece of local history. According to the Daily Item, commissioners have directed Planning and Economic Development department to draft a letter urging RiverWoods and Albright Care Services not to demolish the 164-year-old Slifer House. While demolition is still likely, commissioners say the county could use its approval of RiverWoods’ financing request as leverage to push for preservation. Built in 1861 by Civil War leader Eli Slifer, the mansion later served as an orphanage, hospital, and museum before closing in 2019. A final decision on its fate could come about soon.
