JERSEY SHORE MAN VICTIM IN FATAL CRASH

A man from Jersey Shore was the victim in the crash that shut down Route 44 in Nippenose Township yesterday morning.  According to the Sun Gazette, Stephen Zwald, who worked for Jersey Shore Cemetery, was coming back to work after an appointment and went off the roadway while attempting to pass another vehicle at about 11:30am, and hit a utility pole.  The Lycoming County Deputy Coroner pronounced Zwald deceased at the scene after rescue crews from Antes Fort, Jersey Shore and Nippenose Township freed the man’s body from the wreckage.  Route was closed for about forty minutes and then one lane was reopened to traffic before 1pm.  PPL says they will replace the damaged pole about a half mile south of State Street at a later date.

PATIENT CHARGED WITH FELONY ASSAULT ON STAFF MEMBER

A Williamsport man who was hospitalized in April at UPMC Williamsport has been arrested for inappropriate sexual comments to and physical assault of a hospital staff member.  According to the Sun Gazette, 68 year old Edward Fisher, Jr. is accused of three similar incidents while he was a patient for three hours last April 9th in which he grabbed the woman aggressively, against her wishes.  Fisher was arraigned on a felony charge of aggravated assault and three counts of indecent exposure, and released on 75 thousand dollars bail. 

EMERGENCY CHANGE IN POLLING PLACES

There’s been an emergency change of polling places for those in Loyalsock Township Precinct 7 for the November 8th General Election only.  According to the Lycoming County Board of Elections, due to an emergency at the regular facility, voters will use the Lysock View Complex at 542 County Farm Road.  There will be signs posted at the new and old polling place on Election Day which will remind voters of the change.  Notification letters have been mailed to all registered voters in the township.  Details at lyco.org/vote

TROUT STOCKING STARTS NEXT WEEK

Only one North Central PA County will be stocked with trout for the winter schedule this year, which will begin next week and continue through December.  According to the Pennsylvania Fish and boat website, Tioga County’s Beechwood Lake will be stocked with rainbow trout from the Bellefonte hatchery and  areas of Lebanon County in southeastern PA will be the first to be stocked the second week in November.  Residents can get more information at fish and boat dot com or obtain a fishing license online at huntfish.pa.gov.

ISIS INMATE NEGOTIATES CHARGES FOR STABBING OFFICER

The federal inmate serving a 40 year sentence in Allenwood as a member of ISIS involved in a 2016 plot to detonate bombs in Times Square and in the New York City Subway system, asked the court to plead no contest in a stabbing incident at the facility in December of 2020, and was denied.  According to Penn Live, the member of ISIS Abdulrahman el Bahnasawy, attacked an Allenwood Penitentiary corrections officer, blinding him, and indicated at the time that the attack was on behalf of the Islamic State.  Federal attorneys say a plea of no contest does not accurately represent the seriousness of the offense and is not a deterrence.

CITY POLICE REQUEST NEW UPFITTED VEHICLES

Williamsport City Council will consider the addition of two new up-fitted Dodge Durangos, after the Williamsport Bureau of Police submitted a request to use American Rescue Plan funds for the purchase.  According to the Sun Gazette, council will review the resolution to purchase the vehicles using just over 156 thousand dollars which includes all lights graphics and computer and radio technology.  Williamsport was awarded almost 25 million dollars in funding as a result of the COVID pandemic and must allocate funds for use by 2024, and use it by 2026.

APPLY FOR FEDERAL FUNDS FOR HEATING BILLS THIS YEAR

The Annual Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program started this week and applications are being accepted for the 2022-2023 season.  According to the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services, LIHEAP is a federally funded program for renters and homeowners, providing cash and crisis grants until April 28th 2023.  The funds are transferred directly to a household utility company as a grant which does not have to be repaid by the recipient.  The income limit is 150 percent of the Federal Poverty Limit – a gross income of just over 20 thousand dollars per year.  You can apply online at compass.state.pa.us. or call 1-877-395-8930.

ONE POWERBALL WINNER IN NORTHUMBERLAND, BUT NOT THE JACKPOT

State lottery officials reported that there was one 150 thousand dollar winning ticket sold for the last Powerball drawing at a Riverside lottery retailer in Northumberland County. According to the Daily Item, the ticket matched four of the five white balls drawn, and the red Powerball.  The winner, who will not be identified until they come forward to claim the prize, is among over 296 thousand other Powerball ticket holders who won some form of the prize this week, just not the jackpot – that has now grown to estimated annuity value of $1.2 billion, or $596.7 million cash, for the next drawing on Wednesday.
