SUNBURY FIRE KILLS TWO

Two people died and one person was injured after being rescued from a three-alarm fire in Sunbury Saturday night.  According to the Daily item, the Northumberland County Coroner has not released any information as of yesterday, since the investigation into the blaze will continue today involving the county coroner and a state police fire marshal. Firefighters were initially called to the home in the 300 block of Walnut Street just before 4pm Satuday two more alarms were called out within 15 minutes.  Two nearby homes were also damaged from the smoke and flames, but no other injuries were reported.

YEARS OF FALSE REPORTS SENDS MOM TO JAIL

A Mifflinville mother of two is facing charges of felony child endangerment, misdemeanors of false reports, and tampering with evidence after numerous allegations were brought claiming abuse of her children, physical and sexual, which ended up being false.  The alleged abuse also included repeated invasive medical examinations on the children. According to North Central PA dot com, police say 31 year old Erica Rene Shaw has been repeatedly bringing claims of abuse against the child’s father, during medical exams of the children for several years, all turning out to be unfounded after an investigation by Children and Youth Services.  Shaw was arraigned and jailed with unsecured bail set at 40 thousand dollars, with a preliminary hearing coming up December 8.

PA UNIVERSITIES COULD HIRE POLICE FASTER

A Bill to make it easier for Pennsylvania Universities to hire campus police officers in a more expedited manner that doesn’t involve a months-long process of obtaining a commission from the governor via the state Department of Education.  According to North Central PA dot com,  state Reps. Clint Owlett, Donna Oberlander and Jim Struzzi, who represent Mansfield, Clarion and Indiana universities were pleased with the legislation that was overwhelmingly approved by the House and Senate.  House Bill 1988 will now go to the governor’s desk and if signed, will take effect immediately.

HALLOWEEN SAFETY FOR KIDS AND DRIVERS

Many local neighborhoods will have Halloween celebrations tonight between 5pm and 9pm and local hospital and law enforcement officials are reminding motorists that Halloween is the most likely day of the year children are injured or killed by a vehicle.  Geisinger Pediatrics suggests dressing kids up using glow sticks, flash lights, reflective tape or wristbands, and to make sure make sure kids are wearing proper fitting shoes and costumes.  Drivers are reminded to be alert for kids crossing mid-block instead of at the intersection – and to slow down.

TWO ADMIT WRONGDOING AT CARE FACILITY

After an unresponsive elderly woman, who was a resident at Selinsgrove Center, was found to have injuries, two former employees have been charged with endangering the welfare of a dependent and tampering with records.  According to North Central PA dot com, 42year old Stacey Nerhood of Richfield and 39 year old Bradley Molyneaux of Northumberland, later admitted they had covered up that they had not followed protocol when transferring 89 year old Ethel Krouse who fell from a lift last April and has suffered complications since.  Nerhood and Molyneaux were arraigned October 21st and are free on bail with a preliminary hearing Wednesday.

OLD CITY PROJECTS FUNDED BY OFFICE OF BUDGET

There are two upcoming projects in the City of Williamsport that received funding last week thanks to the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program.  According to Senator Gene Yaw, practical upgrades through the Old City Williamsport Mixed-Use Development project and The River Valley Plaza project, as part of the Old City East 3rd Street Gateway Strategy,  will support the businesses that anchor the city, reserve its charm and have a transformative impact on the City and Lycoming County.  RACP is a $3.1 billion program administered through the Office of the Budget.

MEDICARE EXPANDS FEDERAL FUNDING

Federal approval was received in the commonwealth allowing a Medicaid expansion to cover a full year after pregnancy as a way to improve access to postpartum care of the baby and reduce maternal mortality rates.  According to the Daily Item, Pennsylvania already had extended the coverage from 60 days as part of the American Rescue Plan, but now the federal funding can be applied with the approval.  Public health leaders say that expanding Medicaid reduces cost barriers for low-income individuals who tend to be at higher risk for complications.  About 30 percent of births in Pennsylvania are covered by Medicaid.

WORK THIS WEEK ON I-80 IN MONTOUR COUNTY

PennDOT has reported  some maintenance work on I-80 Eastbound in Montour Count this week.  Watch for PennDOT crews on the scene from 8am til 2pm Tuesday around mile marker 222  in Liberty Township west of exit 224 in Valley Township.  The right lane will be restricted and motorists are asked to be alert.  In Case of bad weather the work will take place on Wednesday of this week.
